Allergies are incorrect response of the immune system to a foreign substance.
Substances that cause allergies are called allergens.
The most common allergic symptoms include itchy/red eyes, sneezing and a runny
nose, itchy nose/throat, asthma symptoms (wheezing and coughing), hives. Major
allergic diseases are: seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), allergic conjunctivitis,
asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic skin reactions, urticaria, severe allergic reactions to
food, medications, insect stings etc.

A variety of medications with different pharmacological mechanisms of action are
available for treatment of allergy.

Antihistamines are used primarily for alleviation of urticarial rashes and nasal allergy,
seasonal allergic rhinitis, pruritus associated with atopic eczema, nausea and
vomiting. The older antihistamines are termed 'sedating', as they cause drowsiness in
some people. The newer antihistamines, which are devoid of these effects, are termed
'non-sedating'
