Finasteride (Generic Propecia®) is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the
treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex and the anterior mid-scalp area. Finasteride is a
hair growth stimulant  that exerts its effect by blocking production of a male hormone in the scalp
that causes stopping of the hair growth. The effect of finasteride is manifested by a decrease of the
hair loss and increase of the hair re-growth on the scalp. Hair growth on other parts of the body is
not affected. The dose necessary to produce hair restoration benefits is 1 mg tablet, taken once
daily. The treatment should be long-term (3 months - 1 year) in order to keep the beneficial effect of
the hair.

Side effects
Side effects are usually rare. Some patients report a decreased libido (inability to have or maintain
an erection), a reduction in the amount of semen they produce during ejaculation, pain in the
testicles. However, these symptoms are not dangerous and disappear if the treatment is stopped.
Allergic reactions to finasteride are extremely rare but if they appear (e.g., rash, dizziness, itching or
troubles in breathing), stop taking the drug and notify your medical practitioner.

Precautions
Before starting the therapy with finasteride, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, prostate
cancer, urinary tract diseases, allergies to medications. Finasteride should not be used by women
