A wide variety of medications with different pharmacological mechanisms of action are
available for treatment of depression.
The antidepressants are classified into the following main groups: monoamine oxidase A
inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) , tricyclic antidepressants, and
serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors.
The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are most widely used antidepressants because
they are easy to use, and their side effects are better tolerated than those of older
antidepressants. The most frequently used SSRIs are fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline
(Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), and citalopram (Celexa). A newer antidepressant is venlafaxine
(Effexor®), which is closely related to the SSRIs.
Antidepressants are used for treatment of depression, panic disorder,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, premenstrual dysphoric
disorder, social anxiety disorder etc.
