Anxiety is an emotional condition characterized by persistent feelings of apprehension,

Many medications with different pharmacological mechanisms of action are available for
treatment of anxiety.
Benzodiazepines are the main medications in this class. Anxiety medications have
replaced barbiturates in the main group of anxiety drugs and hypnotics. Benzodiazepines
reduce anxiety and muscle tone, and induce sleep. They should be used for short-term
treatment of anxiety (up to four weeks) as they can cause serious problems of
dependence. Antidepressants and beta-blockers can be also used for treatment of
anxiety.
Recently, some non-benzodiazepine hypnotics with low dependence potential have been
developed. They decrease the sleep latency and increase the duration of sleep, and are
