Herpes
Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Herpes simplex virus can cause
oral herpes (small blisters or sores on the mouth) as well as genital herpes. Oral
herpes is caused mostly by HSV-1 and the most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2.
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease. The signs appear typically as one or
more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. When the blisters break, they leave
ulcers (sores). Genital herpes can cause several outbreaks (symptomatic recurrences).
Herpes zoster (shingles) is caused by the chickenpoxvirus. Shingles causes
numbness and severe pain followed by clusters of blister-like lesions on the skin in a
strip-like pattern.

Antiherpes drugs are synthetic antiviral agents with inhibitory activity agains herpes
simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus. They are used for
treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin, genitals, and lips; for acute
treatment of herpes zoster (shingles); and for treatment of chickenpox (varicella).
