Obesity
Obesity is defined as an excessively high accumulation of body fat or adipose tissue in
relation to lean body mass. The amount of body fat includes both the distribution of fat
throughout the body and the size of the adipose tissue deposits. Persons are at high
clinical risk when they have a BMI greater than 30. Body mass Index (BMI) describes
body weight relative to height and is strongly correlated to total body fat content.

A variety of medications with different pharmacological mechanisms of action are
available for treatment of obesity. Most available weight-loss medications approved by
FDA are appetite-suppressants. Appetite-suppressants promote weight loss by
decreasing appetite or increasing the feeling of being full.

Recently a class of drugs called lipase inhibitors (the first representative is Orlistat) were
introduced for management of obesity. They block fat absorption by the intestines. Recent
development is the product  rimonabant which is a cannabinoid  (CB1) receptor
antagonist. When these receptors are blocked, appetite is suppressed, and  tobacco
dependence could also be reduced.
